Description
Old handwritten letter dated October 26, 1949, written in blue ink on a sheet of lined paper. This epistolary document is addressed to a recipient named Geneviève, as indicated by the heading "Ma chère Geneviève" (My dear Geneviève). The letter begins with a mention of the place and date: "Les Carroz le 26 octobre 1949" (Les Carroz October 26, 1949).
The text, handwritten in regular and legible cursive script, occupies almost the entire visible page. The author mainly recounts a recent trip, mentioning the cities of Marseille and Cluses, as well as details about the weather and the atmosphere of the stay ("it was very cold," "a torrential rain," "the snow on the peaks").
The sheet has printed horizontal lines and a left margin, typical of post-war stationery. The blue ink used remains clearly visible, with no major smudges or discoloration on the exposed side. The edges of the sheet are slightly wavy, a sign of old handling, but it shows no tears or apparent stains on the part shown.
The letter is placed on a wooden background with several old books or antique bindings visible in the background, highlighting its period character. No postmark, stamp, or envelope is visible in this image; only the front page of the letter appears.
This type of period correspondence, dated just after World War II, will be of interest for its historical and documentary value. The clear mention of "1949" and the traditional writing precisely place this document in the immediate post-war period, a time of reconstruction and major displacements in France.
Condition
Used letter, sold as is. The sheet shows slight signs of wear due to age, but remains in good overall condition on the visible side. The writing is perfectly legible.
Did you know? Handwritten correspondence from the immediate post-war period offers a direct testimony to daily life, travel, and the state of mind of the French at that time. The practice of handwritten letters was then still central to personal exchanges, especially in the absence of modern rapid means of communication.
