Detailed visual description
Period handwritten letter dated October 1949, accompanied by its original envelope. The set is presented on a dark wooden surface, with a bookshelf of old books in the background. The letter, written in blue ink on cream paper, reveals fine, regular cursive handwriting. In the upper right corner, the date "Dimanche 2 octobre 1949" (Sunday, October 2, 1949) is clearly visible, confirming the date of writing. The matching envelope bears a cancelled red stamp, as well as a postmark dated 3-10-1949. The handwritten address reads: "Madame Jules Blanc, 180 rue de Rome, Marseille."
The text of the letter, addressed to "Chère Maman" (Dear Mother), fills an entire page. Several passages of the content are legible, notably mentioning a stay in Marseille and personal news. The signature "André" appears at the bottom of the page. The writing alternates between blue ink for the body of the text and a mention in black ink for the date in the upper right. The texture of the paper, visible in the photo, appears smooth with a slight age-related patina. No decorative motifs are present; the whole displays a sober style typical of post-war private correspondence.
The cream-colored envelope shows some creases and signs of use, consistent with period preservation. The red 1 franc stamp, illustrated with a female profile, is well-preserved and its cancellation remains legible. The address and recipient's name are written in grey ink, in a slightly different handwriting from that of the letter.
The set constitutes an authentic testimony to French family correspondence from the immediate post-war period, with a clear mention of Marseille and precise dating. This type of handwritten document is prized for the richness of its personal content and its interest in social and postal history.
