Description

Old handwritten letter dated January 27, 1950, accompanied by its original envelope. The set is displayed open on a wooden table, in front of a bookcase filled with old books. The letter is written in blue ink on small-squared lined paper, typical of mid-20th century correspondence. The neat, slightly slanted cursive writing is characteristic of the style of the era.

The envelope visible in the background bears a handwritten address: "Madame Henri Blanc, 180 Rue de Rome, Marseille," as well as a postmark dated January 28, 1950 (Ain). A red stamp is partially visible in the upper right corner, confirming the authenticity and dating of the mailing. The envelope is torn on the right side, revealing the letter inserted inside.

The content of the letter begins with the salutation "Madame," and announces sad news concerning a certain Monsieur Roger. The handwritten text, clearly legible on the visible side, refers to medical events (mention of penicillin, operations), reflecting the post-war context and the state of medicine at that time. The pen used provides a deep blue hue, with no major apparent smudges.

The paper has a slightly yellowed appearance, consistent with its age, but shows no significant stains or major tears on the visible area. The edges of the envelope are more worn, with an irregular opening on the right side. The set retains an authentic charm, with a beautiful presentation for period handwritten correspondence.

The letter and envelope constitute a direct testament to daily life and personal exchanges in France in the early 1950s. This type of document is interesting for its handwritten script, dated postmark, and historical context immediately following World War II.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The envelope shows signs of opening and wear, while the letter remains in good overall condition on the visible side, with legible writing and no major apparent stains.

Did you know? Penicillin, mentioned in the letter, began to be widely used in France after the war, revolutionizing the treatment of bacterial infections. Handwritten letters from this period often bear witness to the rapid evolution of medicine and French society in the early 1950s.
