Description

A collection of personal archives consisting of a handwritten letter dated July 3, 1950, written in English on blue paper, accompanied by its original stamped envelope and a black and white silver print photograph. The letter, addressed to "Geneviève," clearly indicates an English origin ("15 Datchet Road, Old Windsor, Berks, England") and features cursive handwriting in dark ink, regular and legible on the visible side. The cream-colored envelope bears a vintage purple stamp (3d face value) with a "Slough Bucks 3 JY 50" postmark, as well as a handwritten address in Paris, France. The set is well-preserved for a document from this period.

The inserted photograph, small in format (no estimated dimensions), shows a young woman standing outdoors, wearing a coat and a light skirt, in a wooded setting typical of the post-war era. The shot shows sharp contrasts, a classic white border, and a slightly satin finish, typical of silver prints from the 1950s. No name or handwritten indication appears on the visible side of the photo.

The letter, carefully folded, retains a beautiful uniform blue color, with no apparent discoloration on the exposed side. The fluid and regular handwriting testifies to the care taken in the correspondence. The slightly patinated envelope shows signs of use consistent with international mail from that era, as well as handling marks on the visible edges.

This lot perfectly illustrates post-war epistolary exchanges, with its graphic codes, period colored paper, and characteristic photographic style of the 1950s. The set brings together three complementary elements: handwritten letter, stamped envelope, and original photograph, all visible in the presented photo.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The set shows a beautiful authentic patina, some signs of use on the envelope, and slight creasing on the letter, with no visible tears on the exposed side. The photograph has a clean surface, with no major apparent defects.

Did you know? In the 1950s, blue paper was often used for private correspondence in the United Kingdom, as it was perceived as elegant and distinctive. The purple "Wilding" stamps, visible on the envelope, were issued from 1952 and are recognizable by the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, although the example here is dated 1950, just before this iconographic change.
