Early 20th century vintage handwritten letter purple ink
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Old handwritten letter, shown unfolded here, written in purple ink on cream paper. The dense and careful cursive writing fills the entire sheet, with many lines crossing diagonally, a characteristic practice of early 20th-century correspondence to save paper. The text is handwritten, using a quill or an old pen, which can be seen in the fluidity of the ink and the varying thickness of the downstrokes and upstrokes.
The letter shows a beautiful color homogeneity, with the purple ink remaining vibrant and contrasted. The paper, in a slightly yellowed ivory tone, seems to have been well preserved, with no major stains or visible tears on the side shown. The edges are clean, and the central fold marks the letter, typical of mail from that era.
Several passages written in different directions can be distinguished in the image, indicating maximum use of the paper surface, reflecting pre-war epistolary customs. No header or logo is visible on this side; the handwritten text occupies the entire page. The words remain legible to an trained eye, although the writing is cramped and sometimes crossed.
The letter is photographed on a patinated wooden table, in front of a background of old books, which highlights its authentic and historical character. The natural light brings out the reflections of the purple ink and the fine texture of the paper.
Condition

Did you know? In the early 20th century, the use of purple ink was common in private correspondence, particularly thanks to the rise of aniline-based inks, which were more affordable and stable than traditional black or blue inks. Cross-writing helped reduce postage costs by minimizing the number of sheets sent.
