1945 RAF WW2 military handwritten letter + old vintage retro envelope
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Set comprising an old handwritten letter from the World War II period, accompanied by its original envelope. The letter is written in blue ink on lined paper, with English handwriting. The letterhead clearly indicates a British military origin: "3207083 ACI, PALMER / MT SECTION / 'A' DETACHMENT / 103 STAGING POST / R.A.F. B.A.O.R.". The text begins with "My Dear Jenny, Many thanks for your two letters and photos...", indicating a personal exchange between a member of the Allied forces and a civilian recipient.
The visible envelope bears the handwritten mention "SERVICE MILITAIRE" (Military Service) as well as the recipient's address: "Mlle Geneviève Blanc, Chatauvillard (Isère)". A round postmark is also visible, though its exact date is not entirely legible, but the entire set fits within the context of the end of World War II (1945), as suggested by both the keywords and the visible elements.
The letter shows original prominent creases (folding marks for storage in the envelope), a slightly wrinkled surface, and ink that is clearly legible on the entire visible side. No text is visible on the reverse in the photo. The cream-colored envelope shows a patinated appearance with signs of age, but remains complete and without apparent tears on the side shown.
The handwritten style, detailed military letterhead, and wording of the letter are characteristic of correspondence from British soldiers stationed in Europe after 1945. The set illustrates a direct testimony of daily life and epistolary relationships linked to the military context of the RAF and the post-war period.
Condition

Did you know? Letters from the Royal Air Force (RAF) sent from the British Army of the Rhine (B.A.O.R.) in Germany are today valuable sources for historians, as they document the lives of soldiers and exchanges between military and civilians at the end of World War II. These correspondences were often subject to military censorship, but many show great spontaneity and personal emotions.
