Description

Superb period lithograph depicting a theater scene, in a characteristic Art Nouveau style. The artwork, signed "A. Grasset" in the lower left, highlights a subdued atmosphere typical of the late 19th or very early 20th century, identifiable by the artistic treatment of the characters and the intimate ambiance. The scene shows several figures seated in a box, including two elegantly dressed women and a man standing, wearing a dark suit, evoking the worldly universe of the theater. A large stage curtain in mauve hues occupies the left part of the composition, accentuating the theatrical setting.

The lithograph is distinguished by a soft color palette, dominated by pastel tones, notably pinks, mauves, beiges, and touches of blue. The contours are lightly sketched, in a style that evokes the technique of crayon drawing enhanced with colors, typical of Art Nouveau decorative artists. The paper surface has a matte appearance, with no apparent shine, and the image occupies a large central part, surrounded by regular white margins.

In the lower left, a handwritten signature "A. Grasset" and another more discreet, hard-to-read inscription are visible, along with a circular blue stamp. No frame is visible in the photo, the artwork simply resting against a carved wooden cabinet, in a bright setting with stained glass, which highlights the whiteness of the support and the delicacy of the drawing.

The graphic style, composition, and theme of the scene are entirely consistent with the graphic arts production of the Belle Époque, and recall the work of Alphonse Grasset, a major figure of the Art Nouveau movement, renowned for his refined posters and illustrations. The scene evokes the atmosphere of Parisian theaters, with attention paid to clothing details and the expression of the characters.

The lithograph has no frame or mat on the visible side. No major defects appear on the illustrated area, but there are some traces or small stains on the upper part of the sheet, typical of an old work preserved without glass protection.
