Description

This antique book features a marbled hardcover binding, typical of early 19th-century editions. The cover, visible in the photo, displays a veined dark brown and light brown design, reminiscent of wood grain or worked leather, with wavy patterns and some darker areas, characteristic of old speckled or marbled bindings.

The book's spine shows significant signs of wear: the back is partially deteriorated, revealing the internal structure and some stitching threads, which attests to period artisanal craftsmanship. Several chips and missing pieces are visible on the edges, particularly at the top and bottom of the spine, where the cover is damaged and the material appears to be crumbling.

The visible front cover nevertheless retains a beautiful patinated appearance, with a rich and authentic visual texture. No title, inscription, or ornament is legible on the displayed side. The format is rectangular, typical of old religious or philosophical works.

The dominant color oscillates between medium brown and darker shades, creating a warm and deep visual effect. The corners are slightly rounded, which is common on old bindings that have been extensively used. The overall condition shows a strong patina and marks of time, reinforcing the historical character of the work.

This volume corresponds to "Tome VII" of the "Évangile Médité" (Meditated Gospel), an edition dated 1826 according to the keywords provided. This type of religious work was often consulted daily, which explains the visible wear on the binding.

Condition

Used book, sold as is. The binding shows marked defects: generalized wear, missing parts on the spine, blunted corners, and a pronounced patina. The object nevertheless retains structural robustness on the visible side. The edge and inner stitching are partially exposed.

Did you know? Marbled bindings were very popular in the 19th century for religious and scholarly works. This visual technique involved applying pigments to the cover to imitate wood grain or marble texture, thus offering additional protection to the book while giving it a luxurious and unique appearance.
