Lot of 4 old gilded religious medals Virgin Mary Pope Virgo Carmeli wine
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
This lot consists of four antique religious medals, all of pendant form, visible in the photo. Each medal features distinct relief work, illustrating traditional Catholic figures and iconography. The set reveals gilt finishes with an old patina, typical of devotional medals produced in the 20th century, with an aged metallic appearance and visible wear.
The first medal, diamond-shaped, shows the profile of a pope (male bust portrait, ecclesiastical vestment details), framed by corner volutes. The suspension ring is integrated into the ornamentation. The patina attests to prolonged use and antique manufacture.
The second medal is round, adorned with a religious scene in relief. Two seated figures are distinguishable, with the inscription "VIRGO CARMELI" in capital letters on the upper periphery. The rim is slightly worn, revealing the shine of the metal beneath the gilding.
The third medal, oval-shaped, depicts the standing Virgin Mary, with open arms, haloed. A French inscription is legible on the periphery, typical of the Miraculous Medal: "Ô MARIE CONÇUE SANS PÉCHÉ PRIEZ POUR NOUS QUI AVONS RECOURS À VOUS 1830" (O MARY CONCEIVED WITHOUT SIN PRAY FOR US WHO HAVE RECOURSE TO THEE 1830). The surface shows localized wear, particularly on the raised parts.
The fourth medal, round-shaped, shows a female figure in prayer, probably the Virgin, in a style similar to the Miraculous Medal. Details are softened by wear, but the silhouette and halo remain partially visible. The suspension ring is integral to the medal.
These medals all display a matte to satin gilt finish, with traces of oxidation, scratches, and authentic signs of age, with no major chips visible on the presented face.
Condition: Used items, sold as is. Visible signs of wear: patina, scratches, traces of oxidation, softened reliefs in certain areas.
Did you know? The so-called "Miraculous" Medals are inspired by a vision reported by Catherine Labouré in 1830 in Paris. This type of medal, with the French inscription around the Virgin, became widely disseminated in the 19th and 20th centuries as an object of popular devotion.
