Description

This lot includes four antique religious medals, oval and round in shape, visible in the photo. Each medal has an integrated suspension ring, allowing it to be worn as a pendant or used as a religious keychain. The presented sides reveal classic Catholic iconography, finely engraved in a traditional style.

The first medal, oval in shape, depicts the crowned Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus, surrounded by religious symbols. The details of the faces and clothing are finely chiseled, with a visible halo around the heads. The second medal, round in shape, also shows a scene of the Virgin and Child, in a more refined but still detailed style, with a distinctive halo and expressive gestures.

The third medal, round, presents a profile of a saint holding a sword, accompanied by the legible inscription "S. PAULUS" on the right edge, thus identifying Saint Paul. The relief is deep, with a beautiful antique patina visible on the surface, which accentuates the facial features and the folds of the garment.

The fourth medal, oval, features a representation of the standing Virgin Mary with open arms. Around the motif, an inscription in French is clearly legible: "MARIE CONÇUE SANS PÉCHÉ PRIEZ POUR NOUS QUI AVONS RECOURS À VOUS" (O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee). This motto is typical of the "miraculous" medals of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The visible colors are in patinated metallic tones, ranging from matte gold to dark bronze, with homogeneous traces of oxidation and wear, testifying to their age and use. The surfaces show some signs of wear, micro-scratches, and slight material loss, characteristic of antique medals used as religious pendants.

Did you know? The so-called "miraculous" medals, like the one bearing the inscription "O Mary, conceived without sin…", originated from a vision reported in Paris in 1830 by Saint Catherine Labouré and widely distributed from 1832. They are traditionally worn to seek the protection of the Virgin Mary.
