Lot of vintage retro early 20th century portrait photographs
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot consists of three old photographs, presented in portrait format, visible on the front. Each print features a distinct subject, captured in a photographic style characteristic of the early 20th century. The images are in black and white or sepia, with a predominance of brown and grey tones, typical of old silver halide processes.
The first photograph, on the left, shows a woman posing facing forward, dressed in a simple outfit, with a high collar and a bow at the neck. Her serious expression and the sharpness of the shot attest to the work of a professional portrait artist. The mention "Sarre" and "Metz" is visible at the bottom of the print, probably indicating the name of the photographer or the original studio.
The second image, in the center, shows a young boy standing, dressed in a sailor suit, holding a hoop. This photograph is also framed with a cartouche bearing the inscription "L. Petit", undoubtedly the name of the studio or the photographer. The neutral background and the subject's pose evoke children's portraits made between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The third photograph, on the right, is more faded and shows a full-length person, difficult to identify precisely due to blurriness and luminosity. However, the image retains the charm of old photographs with a soft texture and a slightly lighter tone than the other two.
The three photographs are presented unframed, placed on a patinated wooden table, in front of an old bookcase. No mention of specific material is indicated in the keywords, and only the visual aspect of the paper prints is observable. No reverse side, annotations, or details on the back are visible on these images.
Condition
Used items and sold as is. The photographs show slight signs of wear, visible patina and marks of time, particularly a slight blur or haze on the third image, with no apparent tears on the visible sides.
Did you know? Early 20th-century photographic portraits were often taken in studios, using glass plate cameras and natural light or oil lamps. The subjects' clothing and posture reflect the social conventions of the time, when photography served to immortalize important family moments.
