Description

This lot consists of a set of French postage stamps visible in the photo, all of the 20 centimes blue Ceres type. The set exhibits great uniformity: each stamp features the profile of Ceres, the mythological goddess, surrounded by an ornate frame and the text "REPUB FRANC" and "POSTES 20c" in the lower margin. The dominant shade is a vibrant to pale blue, with some variations in hue due to printing or exposure to time.

The stamps are all cancelled, with various numeral or dot postmarks, typical of the first French postal issues of the 19th century. The majority of the cancellations are clearly visible and vary according to the numbers and their arrangement on each stamp. Some postmarks are sharper, others more diffuse, testifying to diverse postal uses.

The presentation on a black sheet allows for appreciation of the diversity of the examples. Several stamps show wider or narrower margins, some are centered, others slightly off-center. The general condition is typical of a period lot: there are signs of wear, small creases, blunt corners, or slight discoloration on some examples.

Ceres' design, the work of Jacques-Jean Barre, is recognizable on almost all the stamps. The fineness of the line, the detailed hair, and the background with dot patterns are characteristic of this iconic series of French philately. The stamps are all classically perforated for this era.

The visible side only shows the front of the stamps, which allows for precise identification of the type and graphical authenticity of the examples present. No reverse side, gum, or handwritten annotations are visible in the image.

Condition

Used lot, sold as is. The stamps show signs of postal use, various cancellations, traces of age, small imperfections or wear visible on some examples. The set corresponds to a typical lot of old stamps handled and stored over a long period.

Did you know? The 20c blue Ceres stamp was first issued in 1849, during the creation of the first French postage stamp. It symbolizes the Republic and was used until the early 1870s. Its motif, designed by Jacques-Jean Barre, has become an icon of European philately.
