Lot France Cérès and Sage stamps cancelled varied colours philately
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot brings together a collection of old French postage stamps, displayed on a dedicated album page. The selection mainly includes stamps from the "Ceres" and "Sage" series, recognizable by their typical illustration depicting the profile of Ceres or the allegorical figures of the Republic. Face values range from 3 to 50 centimes, with a wide palette of colors: green, blue, red, yellow, brown, black, and orange.
Most of the stamps are cancelled, with partially legible date stamps, indicating actual postal use. Several stamps bear the mention "POSTES" and "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" or "REPUB FRANC," as well as numbers indicating their face value. The cancellations are varied, some displaying clearly marked round postmarks, others more diffuse traces. The stamps are arranged in regular rows, some showing slight differences in shade or overprint depending on the series.
Among the examples, we can notably distinguish blue 15-centime stamps, green 5 and 20-centime examples, red 20 and 40-centime, yellow 25-centime, as well as brown 25-centime stamps. We also note the presence of stamps from the "Sage" series (with two figures facing each other) and the "Ceres" series (female profile crowned with leaves).
The stamps have perforated edges, typical of the era, and some show signs of wear or minor imperfections due to their handling and age. The overall condition varies from good to fair, with some hinge marks or residual glue visible on certain examples.
The inscriptions are generally legible, although some cancellations partially cover the mentions or values. The set offers a beautiful diversity of colors, cancellations, and face values, ideal for a visual overview of 19th-century French philatelic production.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. The stamps show signs of use, varied cancellations, and some album marks (hinges, glue traces). Edges may be irregular or slightly worn.
Did you know? The "Ceres" and "Sage" series are among the first stamp issues of republican France, introduced respectively from 1870 and 1876. "Sage" stamps symbolize Peace and Justice, central values of the Third Republic.
