Lot of Madagascar Malagasy Republic canceled stamps RF butterflies
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot consists of antique postage stamps visible in the photo, primarily from Madagascar and the Malagasy Republic. Several different series and issues are represented, including stamps featuring historical figures, RF (République Française) issues, as well as various face values. The colors range from blue, red, green, violet, to brown, with a typical mid-20th century printing. Some stamps are postmarked, indicating their postal use, while others appear to have no visible postmark on the presented side.
The first rows show male portraits, including several "MADAGASCAR RF POSTES" stamps, with different face values (2f, 3f, etc.), as well as a blue "FRANCE LIBRE RF" stamp with a Lorraine cross motif. In the center, there is a yellow "MAURITANIE" stamp at 2.15f, which adds to the geographical diversity of the lot.
The second set highlights a homogeneous series of stamps illustrating a cavalryman or a statuary figure, in different colors (blue, red, green, violet, pink, gray), all labeled "MADAGASCAR RF POSTES". The face values are visible on each stamp (e.g., 2f, 3f, 45f, 60f, 70f), reflecting the variety of issues available in this lot.
In the bottom left, a stamp illustrated with a butterfly on a blue background, captioned "REPUBLIQUE MALGACHE POSTES" and "COLOOTIS EVOQUE", value 0.30. To its right, another stylized butterfly on a "MALAGASY" stamp (value 50), with the mention "SALAM DUBINI". These two stamps are distinguished by their naturalistic illustration and vibrant colors, contrasting with the classic portraits in the rest of the lot.
Details such as the mentions "POSTES", "RF", face values, and motifs are clearly visible on the presented side. The paper appears to have a matte finish, with some signs of wear or yellowing related to age and handling, with no major apparent defects on the side shown.
Condition
Used items, sold as is. Some stamps show visible postmarks; others are in good visual condition with slight signs of age (yellowing, handling marks). Only the front side is visible in the photo; no details about the back are provided.
Did you know? Madagascar's stamp issues, particularly under the mention "République Malgache," began in 1960 after the country's independence. The butterflies on some stamps reflect the island's rich entomological diversity, renowned for its unique biodiversity.
