Description

This vintage issue of the illustrated magazine Paris Match, dated January 11, 1940, is presented here with its original cover visible in the photograph. The black and white illustration shows a goum member in the foreground, wearing a white turban and equipped with a rifle, in traditional uniform. Several cartridge belts, buttons, and details of the military equipment are clearly visible on the main character's chest. In the background, a second figure also appears wearing a turban, contributing to the documentary atmosphere of the image.

The typical graphic design of the era is found in the iconic "MATCH" logo in white letters on a red background, positioned in the upper left. The lower part of the cover is enhanced with a horizontal red band, where the precise date "11 JANVIER 1940" appears on the right and the original price "2 fr".

The editorial tagline "LE GOUM VEILLE SUR LA PISTE IMPÉRIALE" (THE GOUM WATCHES OVER THE IMPERIAL TRAIL) is printed at the bottom left, indicating the main subject of this issue, focusing on Moroccan goumier units and their strategic role on the eve of World War II. The paper has a matte tint typical of publications of the era, with a contrasted photographic rendering, without colors other than the red flat tints and the original black and white.

The spine of the magazine and the top edge show slight signs of wear, common on vintage press copies. No other major defects are visible on the front cover presented. The graphic style, typography, and layout are characteristic of the French press of the early 1940s.

Condition

Used magazine, sold as is. Slight wear visible on the spine and top edge, with no apparent missing parts on the front cover. Vintage press copy, consistent with its age.

Did you know? Paris Match, founded in 1949 under this name after an earlier version called Match l'Intran, has become one of the most iconic French weeklies for its photographic reports. This 1940 issue belongs to the first series, before the suspension linked to World War II, and testifies to the documentary role of the illustrated press at that time.
