Godzilla 1964 Marusan PlaModel vintage kit – Japanese Toho box
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Vintage Japanese model kit, visible in the photo, depicting Godzilla in its 1964 version, officially licensed by Toho. The original box features a color illustration of the famous monster, here in a dynamic pose, with its mouth ajar revealing white teeth and a stylized red beam, typical of Godzilla visuals from that era. The image shows the creature against an orange-red background evoking a volcanic or apocalyptic landscape, accentuating the dramatic aspect of the scene.
The box, rectangular with square corners, displays several inscriptions in Japanese and English on its main face. In the upper left, the "MARUSAN PLAMODEL" logo appears on a blue background, accompanied by the red SAN logo in a white box, as well as the mention "ART. NO. 511-38". The graphic design is characteristic of the 1960s, with bold fonts and a dense composition. The Marusan brand is clearly visible, as is the Toho logo, attesting to the official license.
The central visual highlights Godzilla's scaly texture, with green, black, and gray reflections, and light dorsal plates evoking the 1964 cinematic version. The entire box is bordered by a white frame, typical of Japanese model kits from this period. Several Japanese texts are printed on the right, including the name Godzilla in vertical red, and other blue and black mentions, as well as technical or descriptive details.
On the lower left part of the box, two small golden inserts and a red circle are visible, probably authenticity and distribution labels or logos. Another black circular logo is located in the bottom right, next to the mention ©1964 東宝・東京楽譜 (Toho, Tokyo Music Publishing). No interior content is visible in the photo; only the front face of the box is shown.
The overall presentation, period graphics, and visual condition of the box make it an emblematic object of vintage Japanese model kits, prized for their fidelity to kaiju eiga licenses and their retro style.
Condition
Used item sold as is. The original box is visible in the photo: corners and edges appear clean, without apparent tears or creases on the displayed side. Some minor traces or superficial wear possible due to age, but no major visible defects on this side.
Did you know? Marusan, founded in Japan in 1947, is one of the pioneers of plastic toys and model kits in Japan. It was the first company to produce Godzilla licensed models as early as the 1960s, helping to popularize monster (kaiju) model kits worldwide. The film "Mothra vs. Godzilla," released in 1964, marked a key step in the monster's design, reproduced here on the box.
