African mask hand-carved bone sculpture tribal ethnic decor
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This African mask, shown in the photo, has an elongated and vertical shape, characteristic of many artistic traditions from Central and West Africa. The piece displays a stylized face with clean lines: almond-shaped eyes, a long, straight nose, and a discreet mouth. The forehead is high, adorned with engraved relief patterns and oblique incisions, highlighting the manual craftsmanship. The lateral edges of the mask reveal regular serrations, accentuating the tribal and decorative effect.
The visible surface shows a light patina, typical of bone, with ivory nuances and natural markings, attesting to an organic hand-carved material. The entire sculpture reveals a deliberately raw appearance, with striations and irregularities that bear witness to artisanal shaping. The light highlights the satin polish of the material, as well as the contrasts between the smooth areas and the incised details.
The mask is presented upright, resting on an unseen but stable base, suggesting a certain thickness. The back is not visible in the photo, in accordance with the instructions. No hanging system, signature, or mark is observable on the exposed front. The engraved patterns and the symmetry of the face evoke work inspired by ethnic arts, suitable for interior decoration or display on a shelf.
The object, according to the keywords, is made of bone, which is confirmed by the visible hue and texture. The finish shows traces of manual polishing and carving, typical of decorative tribal objects. This mask can also be likened to a statuette or a decorative figure, due to its three-dimensional form and assertive visual presence.
Condition
