Description
This old bronze medal has a classic circular shape and features a brown patina characteristic of historical decorations. The medal is showcased on a deep red velvet background, accentuating the solemnity and nobility of the object. On the visible side, the embossed scene depicts a draped female figure, an allegory of the Homeland, holding a flag and accompanied by a young man in uniform, symbolizing military preparedness.
The composition is finely detailed, with high-relief figures and a secondary scene to the right showing a group of soldiers in action, highlighting the martial theme. Visible inscriptions include "SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM" in an arc at the top, and "PRO PATRIA" at the bottom, two historical Latin mottos related to national defense and the spirit of service.
The edge of the medal has a smooth surface, with no additional decoration apparent on the visible side. The whole testifies to a fine mastery of engraving, typical of French honorary medals from the late 19th or early 20th century, a period when military preparedness was highly valued.
The medal shows some traces of wear and small marks visible on the relief, probably related to its age and handling over time. No details are observable on the reverse or the edge, as these are not visible in the provided photo.
The presentation in a red velvet case (only the lower part of which is visible) further emphasizes the official and ceremonial character of this decoration. The ensemble exudes a strong impression of solemnity, reinforced by the quality of the engraving and the powerful symbolism of the inscriptions and the scene depicted.

Did you know? The Latin motto "Si vis pacem, para bellum" means "If you want peace, prepare for war." This maxim, frequently used in the French military context at the end of the 19th century, underlines the importance of military preparedness as a guarantee of national security. "Pro Patria" medals were often awarded during official ceremonies to young recruits or those distinguished for their military service preparation.
