Description

This commemorative bronze medal, visible in the photo, pays tribute to the centenary of the founding of the Bouches-du-Rhône Red Cross Committee, covering the period 1870-1970. Round in shape and of classic proportions, it features a refined relief illustrating a horse-drawn emergency carriage, typical of the late 19th century, traveling on cobblestones. In the background, stylized trees provide depth to the scene.

Around the edge of the medal, a perfectly legible embossed inscription reads: "CENTENAIRE DE LA FONDATION DU COMITE DE LA CROIX-ROUGE DES BOUCHES DU RHONE" (CENTENARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE BOUCHES-DU-RHÔNE RED CROSS COMMITTEE) accompanied by the mention "1870-1970" at the bottom of the composition, beneath the main scene. A discreet Red Cross symbol also appears, confirming the humanitarian purpose of the object.

The medal has a slightly patinated matte finish, with dark bronze hues and lighter areas on the reliefs, enhancing the legibility of the details. No manufacturer's hallmark is visible on the presented side. The object is placed on a yellow velvet cushion (not included), which highlights its contrasts and the finesse of its engraving.

The edge is not visible in the photo, so it is not possible to specify whether there is any additional inscription or signature. The reverse is not shown, which limits the description to the illustrated obverse.

The scene depicted, associated with the mention of the years 1870-1970, suggests that this medal was issued specifically for the centenary, a common practice in relief societies or charitable associations. The overall aesthetic and typography are typical of French commemorative productions of the 20th century, with quality craftsmanship and attention to historical detail.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The obverse has a beautiful homogeneous patina, without deep scratches or visible chips. A few tiny signs of age-related wear may be observed on the surface, without affecting the legibility or integrity of the medal.

Did you know? The French Red Cross, founded in 1864, saw the creation of numerous departmental committees in the late 19th century. Commemorative medals are often issued to celebrate key anniversaries of these institutions, serving as both historical testimonials and recognition for committed volunteers and donors.
