Vintage Blue Catholic Religious Medal, Antique Round Pendant
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This vintage Catholic religious medal features an imposing round shape, with a large integrated bail for suspension. The visible side reveals a central medallion in a translucent blue hue, adorned in relief with a female figure, probably the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus, surrounded by a circular inscription in capital letters. The peripheral inscription, though partially legible, suggests a traditional devotional use. The edge of the medal displays an aged and patinated finish, suggesting ancient craftsmanship. The peripheral structure, openworked in four segments, highlights the central medallion and accentuates the contrast between the intense blue and the gray tone of the whole.
The blue medallion, appearing enamelled or made of colored glass, offers a translucency that catches the light, highlighting the details of the religious motif. The contours of the figure and the inscriptions are finely molded, testifying to careful craftsmanship. The large suspension ring, integral to the main body, suggests use as a wall pendant, on an altar, or as a devotional object to hang.
The surface of the outer circle shows a heterogeneous patina, with traces of oxidation or wear, typical of an object that has passed through several decades. No major chips or missing parts are visible on the photographed section, which indicates a good general condition for an old piece. The contrast between the luminous blue of the center and the gray border gives the whole a retro aesthetic, characteristic of religious objects from the mid-20th century.
The medal is placed on a bright yellow cushion, which enhances its hue and structure. No manufacturer's markings are visible on the front. The iconography and graphic style evoke French or European production, typical of devotional objects from the 1950s to 1970s.
Condition

Did you know? Religious medals made of colored glass or enamel were particularly popular in France in the 20th century, especially for pilgrimages or as First Communion souvenirs. Their manufacture often involved specific molding and setting techniques, combining metal and translucent elements to enhance the luminous symbolism of the sacred motif.
