Vintage Catholic religious medal, gold-tone metal, Virgin and Child, antique
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This antique Catholic religious medal features an oval shape with scalloped edges, and an integrated suspension loop visible at the top. The photographed side reveals a relief decoration depicting the Virgin and Child seated on a throne, a classic motif of Marian medals. The perimeter is adorned with a slightly raised frame, composed of foliage motifs and volutes, typical of religious statuary from the early to mid-20th century. The partially legible inscription seems to indicate a pilgrimage site or a Marian appellation, probably "N.D. de Bon Secours" (Our Lady of Good Help), but the text remains partially uncertain in the photo.
The appearance of the medal shows a metallic finish with a golden patina, consistent with the "metal" keyword. The surface shows signs of wear and slight oxidation, particularly around the reliefs and on the bail, giving the item an authentic vintage feel and an antique charm. The details are well-marked despite the wear, especially the folds of the Virgin's garment and the contours of the carved throne.
The reverse side of the medal is not visible in the photo, and no indication is given as to the presence of a marking or additional decoration on the back. The medal is presented in an ornate box with a baroque motif, which is not explicitly included in the listing but highlights the precious and traditional character of the object.
The wide bail allows for it to be worn on a chain, cord, or ribbon. This type of religious medal was often given during pilgrimages, communions, or as spiritual protection. The iconography and style of the medal, associated with the metal's patina, suggest a production from the 1920s to the 1950s, without being able to specify the era further without additional information.

Did you know? Marian medals have traditionally been worn as a symbol of protection and faith since the 17th century. Many European shrines, particularly in France, produced their own medals, often sold or given during pilgrimages, with specific motifs related to the Virgin honored there.
