Description

This antique Scala watch features a rectangular case with beveled corners, with an exposed metallic finish on the edge. The light-colored dial, with a patinated appearance, displays raised gold numerals and hour markers, typical of mechanical watches from the mid-20th century. The hands, also gold, show significant wear. The inscription "Scala" appears at the top of the dial, while "17 RUBIS" is legible at the bottom, indicating a traditional 17-jewel movement, characteristic of quality mechanical watches from this period.

The dial shows significant signs of oxidation and dirt, mainly on the lower half and around the hour markers. The notched crown, located on the right side of the case, is visible and also shows signs of oxidation and wear. The crystal (or top surface) is scratched and partially tarnished, reflecting the watch's age. No strap is visible in the photo; only the watch head is shown.

The overall style of the watch evokes vintage productions from the 1950s to 1970s, with geometric aesthetics and applied raised numerals. The contrast between the metal case and the light dial accentuates the retro look of the piece. The overall design is sober and functional, prioritizing readability and robustness.

The visible inscriptions ("Scala," "17 RUBIS") are faithfully transcribed, with no other apparent markings on the visible face. Some stains and traces of oxidation are present on the dial, particularly around the 3 and 6 hour markers, as well as on the edge of the case.

The watch is offered without a strap, which allows for restoration or use for spare parts. The rectangular shape and the gilded finishes of the dial make it a typical example of a vintage mechanical watch, particularly sought after for restoration or mechanism recovery.

Did you know? 17-jewel mechanical watches were very popular in the second half of the 20th century, the number of jewels being a standard to limit movement wear. The Scala brand, although less known than the major Swiss names, offered several robust models with geometric designs in the 1960s-70s, particularly appreciated for their simplicity and reliability.
