Pair of Napoleon III candelabra, 19th century, in gilt patinated bronze and marble, with four lights, openwork decoration of volutes, palmettes and foliate motifs on architectural bases in black and veined marble.

Description

This pair of antique candelabra features a decorative composition typical of the ornamental taste of the Second Empire: slender shafts, animated light arms, openwork scrolls and finely cut foliate elements. Each candelabrum rests on a rectangular stepped base, combining black marble and light veined marble, animated by small bronze feet.

The metallic parts are made of gilt patinated bronze, with nuances of wear giving relief to the decoration. The bobèches are arranged around a central upright with openwork decoration, enriched with volutes, palmettes and stylized motifs. The scalloped-edge cups complete the ensemble and reinforce the decorative balance of the pair.

Context

Napoleon III, 19th century. Furniture and art objects from the Second Empire are characterized by a strong taste for rich decorative compositions, associations of contrasting materials and historicist references. Gilt bronze combined with black or veined marble is fully in line with this aesthetic, both architectural and ornamental.

Condition

Used antique objects, sold as is. Patina of time, traces of use, occasional oxidation, wear to gilding and small marks on the marble, consistent with age and use. Some visible irregularities at the bases and decorative elements; the ensemble retains a beautiful decorative presence and a harmonious appearance as a pair.
