Pair of antique bronze dragon-decorated wall sconces, 19th-century style
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This pair of antique wall sconces is designed in a richly ornamental style, typical of the 19th century. Each sconce features a dark patinated bronze structure, adorned with embossed winged dragon motifs, characteristic of the eclectic or Neo-Renaissance decorative repertoire. The arms are curved and terminate in sculpted elements reminiscent of clawed feet, reinforcing the fantastical aspect of the set.
The bronze surface shows a natural patina, with traces of green and brown oxidation, attesting to the age of these objects. Several decorative elements, such as the bobèches in the shape of stylized leaves, are visible and detached in the photo. The foliage and shell motifs, as well as the intricate volutes, highlight the care taken in casting and chasing.
The sconces are each composed of two main parts, with curved light arms and decorative wall mounts. The intended location for candles or electrical supports is clearly visible, as is the central assembly system. No markings or inscriptions are legible on the visible parts of the photo.
The winged dragon decor, positioned in profile, is integrated into a symmetrical structure. The details of the scales, wings, and heads are finely crafted, giving the whole a distinct decorative character. The removable bobèches feature an acanthus leaf motif, typical of late 19th or early 20th-century productions.
The dominant color is dark bronze with shades of verdigris and some golden reflections on the prominent parts. The ensemble shows a homogeneous style and execution, suggesting careful workshop craftsmanship.
