Antique Virgin Mary Pendant 1830 Vintage Religious Oval Medal
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This antique pendant depicts the Virgin Mary in relief, in a classic oval shape instantly recognizable as traditional religious medals. The medal features a patinated finish, with silvery-grey hues and coppery reflections visible around the edge and on the silhouette of the Virgin. The peripheral inscription, though partially legible, evokes the usual prayer of miraculous medals, and the date "1830" is clearly struck on the lower part of the medallion.
The pendant is fitted with a sturdy suspension ring, in an aged gold tone, allowing it to be easily attached to a chain or cord. The central motif features the standing Virgin Mary, arms open, in a posture of blessing, with relief work highlighting the drapery and the outline of the figure. The contour of the pendant is slightly raised, accentuating the depth effect of the design.
The surface of the pendant shows signs of wear and authentic patination, characteristic of an antique piece of jewelry with a history. The details of the Virgin's face and hands are still visible despite the wear, testifying to careful engraving work originally. The background presents a matte texture, contrasting with the more polished parts of the silhouette and frame.
This religious pendant is part of the tradition of "miraculous" medals that appeared in the 19th century, recognizable by their iconographic composition and the date 1830, often associated with the Marian apparitions in rue du Bac in Paris. The whole possesses an evident vintage charm, reinforced by the antique appearance of the piece and the slightly faded typography of the text.
The object is presented on a white fabric support, highlighting its reliefs and patinated tone. No manufacturer's mark is visible on the front. The ring and the bail also show a consistent patina, consistent with the apparent age of the medal.
