Old photograph Charles Gallot Paris vintage curiosity cabinet
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Old photograph on cardboard, produced by the Charles Gallot studio, located at 1 Boulevard Beaumarchais in Paris. It is a portrait of a woman presented in bust form, in an oval medallion, characteristic of photographic portraits from the late 19th century. The scene is printed in black and white on a thick cardboard support, typical of "cabinet" photographs used at that time.
The portrait shows a woman posing frontally, wearing a dress with puff sleeves, a high collar and finely crafted details, revealing late 19th-century women's fashion. Her elaborate hairstyle and the simplicity of the setting highlight the subject's face and serious expression, in accordance with the codes of studio photographic portraiture of that period.
The presentation card is light-colored, with a wide margin around the photograph. The inscription printed at the bottom clearly states: "PHOTOGRAPHIE CHARLES GALLOT, 1 Boulevard Beaumarchais, PARIS", attesting to the Parisian origin of this print.
The photograph shows good overall preservation on the visible side. There are slight handling marks and an authentic patina on the edges, without major alteration to the main visual. No notable structural defects are visible on the photographic area itself.
This type of print, often called "cabinet portrait" or "carte cabinet", was prized in curiosity cabinets and today serves as a decorative object or a historical testament to Belle Époque Paris.
Condition
Used item sold as is. Shows an period patina, minimal traces of wear on the edges, visual appearance consistent with an old print.
Did you know? "Cabinet" photography appeared in France in the 1860s and was very successful until the early 20th century. Parisian studios, like Charles Gallot's, offered these portraits to a bourgeois clientele eager to preserve or offer the image of their loved ones in an elegant and standardized format.
