Description

This antique "cabinet" photograph features a sepia portrait of two children, a girl and a boy, posing side by side. The image, slightly faded by time, offers a soft and nostalgic atmosphere, typical of late 19th-century photographs. The rigid cardboard mount, with straight edges and rounded corners, is characteristic of studio photographic formats from that era.

The bottom of the card bears the decorative inscription "E. SASSY SÉTIF Rue de Constantine," indicating the photographer's name and the location of his studio in Algeria, which gives this piece particular interest for the history of French colonial photography. The gilded lettering and printed ribbons reflect the care taken in the studio presentation.

The photograph shows the two children in period attire, the boy wearing a sailor suit, a popular clothing motif among the bourgeoisie of the late 19th century. The sepia rendering, the formal pose, and the depth of the subjects' gaze contribute to the heritage dimension of this image, ideal for a cabinet of curiosities style decoration or for illustrating the family and social history of this period.

The cardboard mount has a homogeneous patina, with some visible marks and foxing, typical of this type of antique photographic print. The overall image remains legible, with a beautiful presence despite the partial attenuation of the original contrast.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Antique photograph with a patina, signs of age, and some visible traces on the surface. The cardboard mount remains solid, and the inscription at the bottom is legible.

Did you know? "Cabinet" photographs appeared around 1866 and remained popular until the early 20th century, gradually replacing the carte de visite format. They were often taken in a studio and mounted on thick card, allowing them to be displayed in bourgeois parlors or sent to family.
