Description

This antique lot consists of two taxidermied fish presented in a red-backed display box, typical of curiosity cabinets. On the left, a massive, stocky fish head is visible, identifiable as a rockfish, with a wide open mouth, fully extended pectoral fins, and a rough skin texture. The preservation highlights the anatomical details, including the contours of the skull, the angular shape of the jaw, and the relief of the fins. The dominant color is dark brown with ocher and gray nuances, accentuating the naturalistic appearance of the piece.

On the right, the second specimen is an elongated fish, identified by the label as a pencil fish. Its slender, almost cylindrical silhouette features a smooth texture and a golden-brown color. The caudal end is preserved, and the entire fish shows dry preservation consistent with the tradition of cabinet taxidermy. This fish contrasts sharply with the massive rockfish head, offering an interesting aesthetic and educational duo.

Both specimens are fixed to the back of the box, each accompanied by a period handwritten label. The rockfish label states: "Rockfish, found under sand or rocks. Its spines are very dangerous. Fatal if stung." The pencil fish label specifies: "Pencil Fish, elongated tube and suction cup snout. Lives in sand or low rocks." These indications add a scientific and authentic dimension to the set.

The display box features a textured red background, framed by a sober-looking black border. The overall condition shows some signs of age, particularly small marks on the background, but the whole remains solid and ready for display. The fish are well-maintained and the old labels are legible, enhancing the decorative and educational appeal of the lot.

This duo of taxidermied fish is typical of 20th-century educational collections or curiosity cabinets, sought after for vintage decoration, museography, or naturalistic study. The specimens offer a raw and authentic aesthetic, ideal for an interior in the style of a cabinet of curiosities or for enriching a display case of rare and unusual objects.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Visible signs of wear on the bottom of the box and slight alterations to the specimens due to age. The labels are period and legible. Small marks are present on the support, without affecting its solidity.

Did you know? Rockfish, also known as "stonefish", are renowned for their extremely dangerous venomous spines, capable of causing severe injuries. Pencil fish, on the other hand, often live buried in sand or hidden under rocks, their morphology making them discreet in their natural environment.
