Vintage 1965 keychain Kaysersberg Lambaréné twinning relief medallion
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Visual description
This antique keyring consists of a round medallion with a relief, suspended from a carabiner-style ring. The visible side features a relief decoration showing two figures shaking hands under a large stylized parasol. One wears a traditional Alsatian costume, the other an outfit evoking Central Africa, symbolizing the twinning of two cities. The relief text on the edge of the medallion clearly states: “1965 JUMELAGE LAMBARENE KAYSERSBERG” (1965 TWINNING LAMBARENE KAYSERSBERG).
The surface of the medallion displays a matte patina, typical of antique objects, with grey-brown nuances and some visible traces of oxidation, particularly around the attachment and the reliefs. The outline of the medallion is sharp, the molding work reveals precise details on the costumes and faces. The upper attachment is connected to the medallion by a small link, and the carabiner also shows a uniform patina, with some signs of wear.
The ensemble presents a retro style typical of the 1960s, both in the typography used and the general aesthetic of the medallion. The central motif, with its stylized characters and large parasol, is emblematic of the Franco-African twinning celebrated at that time.

Did you know? The twinning between Kaysersberg (France) and Lambaréné (Gabon) was made official in 1965. Lambaréné is notably known for the hospital founded by Dr. Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Peace Prize winner, while Kaysersberg is an Alsatian town renowned for its architectural heritage. Commemorative twinning keyrings were frequently produced in the 1960s to mark these symbolic events.
