Description

This old portrait is a charcoal drawing, presented under glass in an ornate 19th-century frame. The artwork depicts a bust of a man, facing forward, wearing a dark jacket, a light-colored waistcoat, a white shirt, and a bow tie. The face is delicately rendered, highlighting the details of the eyes and hair. The background of the drawing remains neutral, focusing attention on the subject.

The composition is carefully centered and surrounded by a burgundy mount with a gold fillet, which enhances the intensity of the charcoal and adds depth to the whole. The frame visible in the photo is richly molded, with stylized floral decoration, and a gilded patina typical of the late 19th century. The framing emphasizes the authentic and decorative character of the piece.

In the lower right corner of the drawing, the signature "A. Castagné 1889" is clearly visible, attesting to the authenticity and date of the work. The charcoal technique is perfectly mastered, with subtle modeling of volumes and shadows, characteristic of academic portraits of this period. The overall impression evokes a solemn atmosphere, typical of bourgeois portraits from the late 19th century.

The image shows only the front of the artwork, with no indication of the back or hanging system. The glass surface effectively protects the drawing, which shows no apparent tears or stains on the visible part. Some signs of age appear on the mount and frame, consistent with the object's age.

This type of old-fashioned portrait, executed in charcoal and carefully framed, was often intended to adorn bourgeois living rooms or private libraries, as suggested by the room decor in the background of the photo.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The item shows signs of age: slight marks and patina on the frame, minor wear on the mount. The drawing itself appears well-preserved under glass.

Did you know? Charcoal was widely used in the 19th century for portrait studies and preparatory drawings, due to its ability to produce deep shadows and precise lines. The charcoal technique allows for a very nuanced rendering, particularly appreciated for depicting faces and draperies.
