Description

Vintage catalytic stove by Thermx, produced by the Société Lyonnaise des Réchauds Catalytiques. This model, typical of the 1940s, features a cylindrical structure with a dark green finish, recognizable by its large circular perforations at the top and base, which facilitate air circulation around the internal catalytic burner (visible through the upper openings). The unit is topped with a flat lid equipped with an articulated metal handle, composed of two rollers, making it easy to transport or move the stove.

On the front, a nameplate is attached, bearing the inscription: "Société Lyonnaise des Réchauds Catalytiques – Thermx – Lyon-S. Clair (Rhône)", as well as a mention of patents associated with the names L. Lumière and J. Herck. The white and gold lettering on a black background, typical of French industrial aesthetics of the interwar period and the early 1940s, attests to the authenticity and age of this appliance.

The tubular body of the stove rests directly on the floor, with a perforated base for better ventilation. The exterior surface shows a homogeneous patina, with some traces of wear and light scratches visible on the paint, indicating past use while preserving a beautiful overall integrity. No superfluous decorative elements, the piece is typically utilitarian, true to the functional design of the era.

The upper handle, made of painted metal, also shows some signs of light oxidation, particularly visible on the rollers, without affecting the solidity of the assembly. The opening or adjustment mechanism is not visible in this view, but the structure suggests simple and robust handling, suitable for domestic or workshop use.

This Thermx catalytic stove perfectly illustrates the auxiliary heating appliances used in France during the first half of the 20th century, both for their efficiency and their robustness. Its industrial look and green color make it a decorative vintage object, sought after for retro or industrial atmospheres.

Did you know? Catalytic stoves used innovative technology in the early 20th century, allowing flameless combustion thanks to a catalyst (usually platinum), which improved safety and energy efficiency. The Thermx brand, produced in Lyon, was one of the French pioneers in this field, particularly for domestic and industrial use in the 1930s-1950s.
