Vintage G. Letellier Montpellier antique burlap sack retro decor
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This antique burlap sack, shown in the photo, is an authentic transport or storage accessory, typical of early to mid-20th-century trade. Its rectangular shape and visible stitching on the edges indicate robust manufacturing, designed for professional use. The natural beige color of the canvas, slightly patinated, is characteristic of sacks historically used for dry goods such as coffee or cereals.
On the visible side, a black inscription is clearly discernible, printed directly onto the canvas: "G. LETELLIER MONTPELLIER", as well as a partially legible circular motif including a stylized animal, probably a donkey or mule, and the marking "A.N.E. 1918" in the upper part. These elements suggest a regional origin and a probable dating to the first quarter of the 20th century, reinforcing the item's vintage authenticity.
The raw texture of the canvas reveals irregular fibers, while the surface of the sack shows several marked creases, indicative of prolonged use. Some areas of wear, particularly holes and fraying, are visible, consistent with the object's age. This gives the sack a retro look and a sought-after patina for interior decoration, especially in an industrial or country style.
The sack is presented upright, surrounded by scattered coffee beans, evoking its original use. No closing system is visible on the presented side. The printing, though partially faded by time, remains legible and adds genuine historical character to the whole.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. Visible wear due to age, presence of holes, stains, and signs of use on the canvas. Inscriptions remain generally legible. This sack is intended for decoration or vintage use, not for direct food contact without internal protection.
Did you know? Burlap sacks were widely used in the early 20th century for trading goods like coffee, cocoa, or cereals. Jute is a robust and breathable plant fiber, appreciated for its resistance to humidity and its ability to preserve products during long-distance transport. Montpellier was an important agricultural trading center and transit point for goods during this period.
