Description

This nativity figurine represents a shepherd, a traditional figure of the Nativity, made of terracotta as indicated in the title. The figurine is hand-painted, with an expressive face, a full beard, and a dark headdress, typical of traditional Provençal rural attire. The character wears a brown cape, white trousers, a long-sleeved shirt with touches of ochre, and black boots, evoking the clothing of shepherds of yesteryear. The green base bears the inscription "PÂTRE" (SHEPHERD) in capital letters, clearly legible on the front. 

The finish presents a matte patina, with some traces of wear and small paint losses visible on the face, cape, and boots, typical signs of an old santon used in a family nativity scene. The details of the modeling, such as the folds of the garment and the shepherd's collected posture, are faithful to the Provençal artisanal tradition. The figurine is in a standing position, hands clasped in front of the chest, in a humble and pious attitude.
