Description

This piece is an antique Chinese sculpture made of soapstone, depicting a standing monk alongside a stylized lion, both resting on an ornamental, rock-like base. The ensemble exhibits fine craftsmanship with particular attention to the details of the figure's face, the musculature of the arms, and the dynamic posture. The lion, with its sculpted mane in relief, rests a paw on an openwork sphere, a traditional element often associated with the symbolism of protection or power in Chinese art.

The sculpture boasts a nuanced patina, ranging from light beige to darker brown tones, typical of soapstone. Polished surfaces alternate with more matte areas, accentuating the volumes and folds of the monk's garment, whose cape drapes elegantly over his left shoulder. The rock-like, darker base contrasts with the main color of the scene, enhancing the relief effect and highlighting the composition.

The monk's face, with its round, serene features, is clear and distinct, with visible ears and a bald head. The figure's hands rest on the lion's back, conveying an attitude of mastery or guidance. The lion, for its part, has bulging eyes, an open mouth revealing its tongue, and a carefully worked, striated mane. The decorative sphere under the lion's right paw is finely openworked with geometric patterns.

There are some traces of wear and minor chips, particularly on the base and certain edges, attesting to the piece's age. No inscription is visible on the presented face. The mounting of the base appears to be original, with a visible joint between the main sculpture and the rocky base.
