Description

An old gem cutter's tool, presented here in the form of a spatula with a wide, rectangular blade, visibly patinated by time. The dark-colored blade, with traces of oxidation, suggests intensive use in a workshop, typical of a gem cutter's or jeweler's tools. Its elongated shape, slightly rounded at the end, allows for precise handling or scraping of materials.

The handle, clearly visible, is made of light-colored wood, adorned with two dark parallel grooves, providing both an ergonomic grip and a sober decorative aspect. The junction between the blade and the handle shows a metal ferrule, also marked by wear, proof of robust and traditional manufacturing. The whole exudes the solidity and authenticity of old workshop tools.

This type of spatula was used for handling, cleaning, or precision work on stones, gems, or precious materials. The worn appearance of the blade, with marks of oxidation and scratches, attests to old and professional use. The handle shows some handling marks but remains structurally intact, with a beautiful natural patina.

The overall finish highlights a utilitarian aesthetic, without superfluous frills, true to tools designed to last and to be used daily in gem cutters', lapidaries', or jewelers' workshops. No marking or logo is visible on the shown faces, which is common for artisanal tools or those produced before industrial standardization.

The spatula is photographed on a wooden background, emphasizing the authentic and vintage character of the object. Its robust appearance and shape clearly evoke productions from the early to mid-20th century, although the absence of markings prevents precise dating.

Did you know? Gem resin, primarily harvested from maritime pines, was historically used in the manufacture of chemicals, varnishes, and inks. Gem cutter tools, like this spatula, were designed to resist corrosive sap and facilitate the collection of resin from tree bark.
