Description
This statue depicts a Chinese sage, identifiable by his long beard, traditional headdress, and smiling face. The work is carved from a single piece of wood, in a classic figurative style of Far Eastern inspiration. The silhouette is dynamic, with the figure appearing to step forward, one arm bent and the other holding a large scroll or open book against him. The ample and stylized folds of the garment highlight the sculptor's mastery and give the piece an expressive presence.

The finish shows a dark patina, probably original, which enhances the details of the face, beard, and clothing. The sculpture is worked in relief, with attention to expressions and volumes, typical of traditional representations of scholars or benevolent deities from the Chinese pantheon. No additional decoration, inlay, or polychromy is visible on the side shown.

Some chips are visible on the figure's right forearm, as well as on the base and the corner of the garment. These localized losses reveal the lighter shade of the wood beneath the patina, indicating ancient wear or damage. The surface also shows traces of wear and rubbing, consistent with an ancient statue exposed to the elements or handled over time.

The statue is carved in the round, with an open gesture and a benevolent smile. The general appearance, posture, and iconography evoke the god Fu, one of the Chinese deities of happiness, frequently depicted in popular Asian art. No distinctive signs, inscriptions, or marks are visible on the photographed side.

Used item, sold as is. Several chips and wear visible on the front, mainly on the right arm, the bottom of the garment, and the base. Restoration project possible or presented in its current state.
