Description

This document, visible in the photo, is an authentic old French telegram, written on vellum paper. The form features a printed header "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE – TÉLÉGRAMME", typical of administrative documents from the early 20th century. The entire telegram is handwritten in black ink, with period cursive script. The sending office "CASTELNAU RIVIERE BASSE" is clearly visible in the upper section, along with several pre-printed fields for postal dispatch and reception. The handwritten text occupies the central part, on horizontal lines provided for this purpose.

The circular postal stamp is clearly visible on the right, dated "7-1-18", which allows this telegram to be precisely dated to January 1918, during the First World War. The cream-colored paper shows a slightly satiny texture characteristic of the vellum paper used during this period for official documents. No decorative motifs are present, the aesthetic remaining sober and functional, true to the administrative purpose of the document.

The visible surface of the telegram shows correct preservation for a paper more than a century old: the document presents traces of handling and some fold marks, particularly on the upper left edge, with no apparent tears on the visible side. The handwritten ink remains legible, although slightly faded in places, testifying to the authenticity and age of the document. No annotations or subsequent marks are observable on the exposed side.

This type of telegram, with its pre-printed fields and postal stamp, constitutes a valuable material testament to the history of communications in France. The presentation in the photo, near antique books and a vintage inkwell, highlights the historical and decorative character of the document.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Presence of fold marks and age-related traces, legible handwritten ink, wear compatible with an old document.

During the First World War, they played a crucial role in transmitting urgent messages, both civil and military.
