Vintage brocaded jacquard velvet fabric, blue, floral liturgical religious pattern
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This antique fabric presented here is a rectangular fragment of brocaded jacquard velvet, used in a liturgical or religious context. The visible side shows a dense and stylized floral pattern, composed of large leaves and light flowers on a dark blue background, creating a relief effect typical of jacquard weaving. The patterns are regularly repeated over the entire surface, evoking the decorative style of church ornaments and altar textiles.
The fabric features brocading work, meaning a superposition of woven patterns, which gives it a rich texture and a slightly raised appearance. The main colors are deep blue and off-white, with subtle nuances in the weaving that enhance the perception of the pattern. The visible edges are finished with a dark red overcasting, ensuring the stability of the textile and limiting fraying, a detail often found on fragments intended for conservation or decorative reuse.
The piece is well preserved for an antique textile, with no tears or apparent holes on the visible side. A slight irregularity is noted around the edge, characteristic of hand-cut and repurposed antique textiles. The surface has a beautiful patina and a matte sheen, typical of old liturgical textiles.
The stylized floral pattern is particularly evocative of textile productions intended for liturgical ornamentation, where the symbolism of the flower (lily, iris, or stylized flower) is frequently used in sacred art. This type of fabric was used for making altar frontals, chasubles, or religious hangings.
This fragment measures approximately 40x30 cm, as indicated in the keywords.
Condition

Did you know? Jacquard brocaded fabrics revolutionized textile production in the 19th century thanks to the Jacquard loom, invented in 1801 by Joseph-Marie Jacquard. This technique allows for complex and repetitive patterns to be created using a system of punched cards, making it possible to quickly produce richly decorated liturgical textiles.
