Description

This antique fabric shown in the photo is a superb example of a liturgical-style brocade textile, made using the jacquard technique. The visible side shows a velvet with a dark background, probably midnight blue or black, adorned with a rich floral pattern embroidered with light and gold threads. The decoration consists of large stylized flowers and plant scrolls, typical of religious ornamentation and church textiles. The whole evokes an altar textile piece, a frontal, or a fragment of a chasuble, with a neat finish on the edges.

The brocade pattern features a marked relief, with metallic or gold-effect threads that highlight the outlines of the motifs. The flowers, composed of several petals and an embroidered heart, alternate with stylized leaves and sinuous arabesques. The ensemble is harmonious, with a beautiful alternation of matte and shiny materials, emphasizing the refinement of the jacquard weave. The plain background highlights the richness of the decoration, typical of textiles intended for sacred or ceremonial use.

The piece is rectangular in appearance, with visible, neatly finished edges. The textile shows good drape and a certain thickness, characteristic of old liturgical brocade velvets. The exposed side shows no visible inscription or apparent mark, in accordance with the use of religious fabrics. No major snags are observable on the shown surface; the fabric retains its luster despite some slight signs of use and a subtle patina.

This antique textile is ideal for the restoration of liturgical objects, religious-themed interior decoration, or the creation of refined textile accessories. Its floral pattern and brocade velvet composition give it great decorative value, both in a traditional and contemporary context.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The visible side shows no major defects, apart from some slight signs of use and an period patina. Please examine the photo carefully to judge the exact condition.

Did you know? The brocade technique consists of adding additional threads during weaving, allowing for the creation of embossed patterns often enhanced with metallic threads. Jacquard liturgical fabrics were frequently used in the making of priestly vestments and altar frontals, particularly in France and Italy from the 19th to the early 20th century.
