Description

This antique fabric, presented here, is a rectangular fragment of jacquard brocade velvet. It is a religious liturgical textile, recognizable by its thick structure and precious appearance, typical of church or chapel ornaments. The piece features a deep grey-green dominant, enhanced by geometric checkerboard patterns and stylized arabesques in black velvet. Regular lines forming a grid structure the whole, while stylized floral or plant motifs animate certain squares, giving this fabric a refined decorative identity.

The brocaded pattern, characteristic of jacquard, presents a subtle relief and an alternation of textures between matte areas and shaved velvet parts, creating a nuanced play of light depending on the viewing angle. The visible borders are finished with burgundy topstitching, a sign of careful workmanship, and the clean cut of the fabric reveals a piece originally probably intended for religious or decorative use.

The visible side in the photo shows a clean surface, with no apparent stains or tears, and the velvet retains a beautiful density. However, a slight patina effect is noted, typical of antique textiles, which adds to the charm of the whole. No logo or inscription is visible on this side.

This fragment, measuring 40x30 cm (as indicated in the keywords), has an ideal format for restoration, textile decoration, or the creation of accessories inspired by sacred art. The richness of the weaving and the quality of the brocade velvet attest to traditional savoir-faire, often associated with workshops specializing in liturgical fabrics.

The palette of greens and blacks, associated with the checkerboard pattern and arabesques, evokes a neo-Gothic or historicist style, common in religious textile productions from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This type of fabric was often used for altar frontals, stoles, or interior decoration elements of churches.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The whole presents good general condition, with no major defects visible on the photographed side. Slight patina of use consistent with the age of the fabric.

Did you know? Liturgical brocade velvet fabrics were frequently made on Jacquard looms from the 19th century, allowing for a wide variety of complex patterns and high quality finishing. This French expertise was long renowned among European sacred art workshops.
