Description

This round trivet features a typical vintage design, combining a black Lucite base with abalone shell fragment inlays visible on the upper surface. The trivet has a regular circular shape, with a flat surface and a rounded edge, characteristic of decorative and utilitarian objects from the 1960s to the 1980s. The shell pieces are arranged irregularly but harmoniously, offering an iridescent and natural mosaic effect, with each fragment revealing green, pink, gold, and bluish reflections depending on the angle of the light.

The Lucite base, clearly visible on the edge and throughout the support, gives the object a solidity and brilliance that highlights the contrast with the pearlescent abalone fragments. The Lucite's appearance is smooth, with a glossy finish that accentuates the visual depth and decorative dimension of the trivet. The surface shows some signs of use, indicating previous use, but no structural cracks are apparent on the visible side.

The abalone shell fragments vary in size and shape, some having natural rough edges, others being flatter. Several pieces naturally display iridescent hues, oscillating between green, blue, and pink, typical of abalone mother-of-pearl. A fragment in the upper right has a natural hole, emphasizing the authentic provenance of the material used.

The arrangement of the elements reveals the black Lucite base in places, creating a sharp contrast that enhances the decorative effect and highlights the brilliance of the shells. The piece, although utilitarian in appearance, has a strong decorative dimension, ideal for a retro or mid-century style table or kitchen.

This type of trivet was often used to protect surfaces from hot dishes while adding a decorative touch to the table, thanks to the use of natural materials and synthetic resin, which was very popular in the second half of the 20th century.
