Description

This antique poster features a reproduction of a drawing by Daumier, a famous 19th-century French illustrator and caricaturist. The image shows a satirical black and white scene, typical of the lithographic style of the era. At the center, a woman in a voluminous dress, seated on a chair, dominates the composition. Around her, several male and female figures are depicted in theatrical postures, evoking a romantic narrative.

The top of the sheet bears the inscription "DESSINS DE DAUMIER" (Drawings by Daumier), attesting to the graphic origin of the work. At the bottom, the title "LE ROMAN" (The Novel) is followed by a caption, also visible: "They are fighting for me... Alfred will abduct me... we will get married." This text reinforces the humorous and narrative character of the scene, typical of 19th-century press illustrations.

The observed printing technique is lithography, recognizable by the fine lines and the slightly granular texture of black on a cream background. The paper shows a slight patina, with visible signs of age on the edges, accentuating the authenticity of the poster. A handwritten label and an ink annotation are visible in the bottom right, indicating old archiving or provenance.

The visual, rich in detail, highlights a clothing style and attitudes characteristic of the first half of the 19th century, reinforcing the historical atmosphere of the whole. Decorative elements such as trees, the carriage in the background, and the gestures of the characters are typical of genre scenes published in French illustrated magazines of this period.

The sheet is presented upright, with the illustrated side clearly visible. The colors are limited to black and white, without added tints, which corresponds to the tradition of period prints. No verso, back, or other side is visible in the photo.

Condition

Used poster, sold as is. Slight signs of handling and age patina on the edges, small creases and marks visible on the paper surface. The image remains legible and decorative.
