Description

This old issue of the "Lisette" newspaper is an authentic weekly publication for young girls, published on Sunday, September 9, 1934. The cover, typical of the 1930s, features a large color illustration in a comic book style, depicting a fairytale scene at a fountain, where a young girl meets an old woman dressed in a green cloak and leaning on a stick. Several other female characters are visible in the background, in a rustic and architectural setting reminiscent of the French countryside.

The title "Lisette" is highlighted in a blue cartouche on a cream background, accompanied by a stylized rose on each side. It reads "Journal des fillettes" (Girls' Newspaper) as well as the mention "Parait : Chaque Semaine" (Published: Every Week). The issue number (36), the precise date (September 9, 1934), the number of pages (16 pages) and the price at the time (25 centimes) are clearly indicated at the top of the cover. Information about the publication office in Paris (1, rue Gazan) is also present.

The period layout, slightly faded colors, and handwritten typography of the title give this newspaper an undeniable retro charm, sought after by collectors of old newspapers and youth comic books. The paper has an ivory tint with signs of wear and uniform yellowing, typical of publications from this period. No details of the back or interior pages are visible in the photo.

The cover illustration, signed at the bottom right, highlights the graphic style of the 1930s, with characters with simple and expressive features, solid blocks of color, and a narrative composition. The caption "Dans l’eau claire de la fontaine" (In the clear water of the fountain) announces the main story to be discovered on page 16.

This newspaper is a representative piece of pre-war French youth press, at the crossroads of illustration, children's literature, and popular comic books. It will appeal to anyone interested in the history of youth publishing, comic book culture, or the vintage aesthetic of the 1930s.

Did you know? The "Lisette" newspaper was launched in 1921 and became one of the most widely read youth periodicals in France until the 1970s. Its formula combined comic strips, illustrated stories, and practical advice for young girls, contributing to the rise of illustrated youth press and the spread of comic book culture in the interwar period.
