WW1 trench art shell HZ 140 military sculpture decor
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
The item shown in the photo is an old shell transformed into a decorative object, typical of World War I trench art. The object features a rounded metal body with a golden patina, adorned with the engraved inscription "HZ 140 m-16" on the upper part, clearly visible on the front face. This engraving refers to a model of a German artillery shell fuse from the First World War, here repurposed from its original function to become a sculpture or desk ornament.
The piece rests on a triangular three-legged stand, also made of metal with a copper finish, forming a stable and decorative base. The legs are cut in an arc, creating a visual effect reminiscent of both Gothic architecture and early 20th-century military styles. The contrast between the golden metal of the main body and the copper tone of the base enhances the artisanal and decorative appearance of the object.
The metal surface shows an period patina, with traces of oxidation, scratches, and signs of use, attesting to its age and authenticity. There are also some areas where the finish is altered, without affecting its stability or general aesthetic. A small metal element is visible on the upper side, probably a remnant of the shell's original mechanism.
The overall shape evokes an inverted bell mounted on a tripod base, typical of creations made by soldiers during the Great War, who used available materials to fashion utilitarian or decorative objects. No other decoration or inscription is visible on the presented face.
