Description

A Catholic tradition wall holy water font of French origin, shaped like a cross with curved outlines. The main structure is covered with a velvet-like fabric in a golden-brown color, giving the piece a warm and refined touch. On the visible side, the cross features linear inlays with a silvery metallic appearance, extending vertically and horizontally, enhancing the solemnity of the object.

In its center, there is a dark gray Christ in relief, molded from metal with an antique patina. Christ's arms are extended on the cross, with a marked attention to anatomical details and the drapery of the loincloth. Above the head, the inscription "INRI" is clearly visible, typical of Catholic crucifixes.

The ends of the cross are adorned with decorative elements with a metallic appearance, finely openwork and crafted in a Baroque style, adding extra relief and an elegant touch to the whole. These ornaments emphasize the sacred and decorative dimension of the holy water font.

In the lower part, a flared, silvery-looking receptacle for holy water is directly attached to the cross. It features embossed decoration around the rim, with floral and rocaille motifs. The inside of the basin shows a visible patina, indicating past use.

The visible side of the object is well preserved but shows signs of wear, particularly on the velvet which has some rubbing, and on the receptacle where patina and signs of oxidation are visible. The whole remains coherent and aesthetic for decorative or liturgical use.

Condition

Used item sold as is. Presence of wear marks on the velvet, visible patina and oxidation on the metallic parts, especially the basin. Please examine the photo carefully for all visual details.

Did you know? Wall holy water fonts were traditionally placed near the entrance of Catholic homes in France, allowing the faithful to make the sign of the cross with holy water before leaving or entering. This type of ornate and textile cross was particularly popular in the second half of the 19th century, a period marked by a resurgence of domestic religious art.
