Description

This antique box contains a set of precision instruments for technical drawing, typical of the equipment used by architects, engineers, or professional draftsmen. The hinged wooden box, with metal clasps, has a burgundy velvet-lined interior, carefully holding the tools.

The visible lot includes five main instruments, two large articulated compasses (one with a golden finish, the other with a gray metallic appearance), as well as several complementary accessories: a divider, a ruling pen with a knurled wheel for tracing, and an extension bar. The screw heads, adjustment wheels, and articulations are clearly visible, confirming the technical quality of the parts for drawing circles, arcs, or precise measurements.

The handles feature varied finishes: some elements show a golden patina, others a matte or polished metallic surface. The diversity of shapes (length, tips, notched wheel) reflects the versatility of the box for various uses in technical drawing, cartography, or applied geometry.

On the inside of the lid, a handwritten inscription "DOMERGUE" is visible, likely the name of a previous user or owner. No manufacturer's marking appears on the instruments themselves on the visible side, and no specific mark is legible on the box.

The general presentation evokes equipment from the first half of the 20th century, with a sober and utilitarian aesthetic characteristic of period instrument kits. The interior velvet shows visible signs of wear, typical of regular use, while the tools show a slight patina, without excessive apparent oxidation on this side.

Condition

Used set, sold as is. Visible wear on the interior velvet, traces of use on the instruments and the box. Hinges and clasps appear functional on the visible side. Handwritten inscription on the inside of the lid.

Did you know? Compasses and drawing instrument sets were essential in technical education and design offices until the widespread adoption of computer-aided design. In the early 20th century, architects and engineers used these kits for the precise drawing of plans, maps, and technical diagrams, each tool having a dedicated function (beam compass, extension bar, ruling pen, or tracing wheel).
