Description

This antique letter opener features a very characteristic shape of an oriental saber, with a large curved blade and a handle with pronounced striations. The object, probably designed as a military souvenir, displays a patinated copper finish on the blade, which bears a visible decorative engraving, including the inscription "Souvenir 1914" surrounded by floral motifs. The guard, in steel gray, adopts a double-curved shape, accentuating the oriental inspiration of the piece.

The brown handle shows a succession of deep grooves, offering a good grip. Its shape evokes that of a yataghan or a shamshir saber, typical elements of commemorative or decorative objects produced during or shortly after the First World War. The top of the handle is openworked in a semicircle, a frequent detail on orientalist-style pieces from this period.

The smooth and curved blade shows uniform wear, oxidation marks, and an old patina consistent with decorative or commemorative use. The engraved motifs, although slightly attenuated by time, remain legible and show careful engraving work. No manufacturer's markings are visible on the exposed face.

The pronounced curvature of the blade, associated with the crossed metal guard of a different color, gives the whole a martial and decorative appearance at the same time, typical of trench souvenirs or desk objects inspired by Great War militaria. The object is distinguished by its imposing appearance and its old copper finish, which warmly catches the light.

This letter opener is presented on a neutral background, allowing the entire visible face to be appreciated. No additional decoration or accessories are included in the photo.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The copper blade has a beautiful patina, traces of oxidation, and some surface marks, without major chips. The engraving is partially faded but remains identifiable. The guard and handle show signs of wear consistent with age and decorative use.

Did you know? Saber-shaped letter openers were frequently given as military souvenirs during the First World War. Many soldiers had personalized inscriptions engraved on these objects, which served both as a desk tool and a symbolic reminder of their service during the conflict.
