Description

This antique military letter opener features a design typical of World War I trench art. The blade has a curved and asymmetrical shape, resembling a stylized axe, with a distinct notch on the lower part. It is made of matte-finish metal, showing a patina of use and some superficial oxidation marks, characteristic of an object handcrafted from salvaged materials. A small, rectangular, beige sticker bears the handwritten inscription "90."

The handle is made from a brass shell casing, clearly visible in the photo, whose cylindrical appearance and golden color attest to the reuse of a cartridge, a common practice in trench craftsmanship. No markings are discernible on the visible part of the handle.

The piece presents a visual contrast between the metallic blade, in a dark gray tone, and the brass handle, adding a touch of authenticity. The object displays artisanal manufacturing, with deliberately simple finishes, typical of creations made by soldiers during the Great War.

The atypical and elaborate shape of the blade suggests a decorative intention while remaining functional for use as a paper cutter, letter opener, or ouvre-lettres. This type of tool was often made in the trenches from available military materials and given as a souvenir or utilitarian object.

This letter opener is part of the trench art tradition, where each piece is unique, shaped according to the inspiration and resources of the moment. Its overall condition testifies to its age, with a beautiful period patina and visible signs of use on the metallic surfaces.

Did you know? "Trench art" refers to objects made from shell casings, shrapnel, or other materials salvaged from the front, mainly during World War I. Many soldiers thus crafted letter openers, pen holders, or decorative objects, both as a pastime and to keep a memory of the conflict.
