Napoleon III double zoomorphic inkwell with chamois decoration, 1890s style, desk decor
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This superb double inkwell features a remarkable zoomorphic composition, typical of the Napoleon III style around the late 19th century. The piece showcases a finely sculpted chamois figurine, standing on a pedestal evoking a mountainous relief. The entire ensemble rests on a wide base adorned with plant motifs and volutes, in a Rocaille aesthetic characteristic of this period.
Two ink reservoirs are placed on either side of the central scene. The left reservoir is open, revealing a dark interior, while the right one retains its decorative relief lid. Visible decorative elements include floral and foliate relief motifs, as well as a central cartouche on the front adorned with an amber-colored cabochon (visual aspect, material unidentified).
The inkwell's surface boasts a dark, patinated finish, with deep brown hues and areas of subtle brilliance on the reliefs. The ensemble conveys an impression of robustness and elegance, reinforced by the delicacy of the sculpted details on the animal and the surrounding decorations.
The richly decorated, four-legged curved base ensures the object's stability and highlights its 19th-century decorative inspiration. No markings or inscriptions are visible on the front. The overall condition shows slight signs of wear and a uniform patina, attesting to the piece's age.
This model perfectly illustrates French decorative art of the era, with meticulous work on fauna and flora, hallmarks of the Napoleon III taste for naturalistic ornamentation and sophisticated desk objects.
