Caen Castle first day cover, illustrated stamp, FDC philately
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This illustrated envelope features a view of the Château de Caen, in brown and blue tones, depicted in polychrome print on the left side of the visible face. The inscription "CAEN "LE CHÂTEAU"" appears clearly below the illustration, accompanied by a very fine print that highlights the architecture of the monument and the details of the surrounding landscape.
In the upper right section, the printed mention "PREMIER JOUR D’ÉMISSION" (First Day of Issue) is visible, followed by the date "7 JUIN 1955", indicating that this is a First Day Cover (FDC). Two clear round black postmarks "PREMIER JOUR CAEN" are legible, stamped around the stamp, confirming the philatelic authenticity of this special issue.
The affixed stamp, visible in the upper right, features an architectural motif, likely related to the Château de Caen, predominantly in gray-blue. The ensemble presents a harmonious composition typical of French commemorative philatelic envelopes from the mid-20th century.
The envelope is protected by a transparent plastic film, which helps preserve the colors and prevent any deterioration due to handling or humidity. A small sticker with the handwritten mention "WF" is affixed to the lower right part of the visible face.
The visible face shows no major apparent defects. The print remains sharp, with no visible signs of discoloration, halos, or creases, with the exception of slight signs of wear on the protective film, common for this type of presentation.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. The visible side, under plastic protection, shows good overall preservation. Some superficial marks on the plastic film, with no noticeable impact on the envelope itself.
Did you know? The "Premier Jour" (First Day) postmark is an international philatelic tradition aimed at marking the very first circulation of a stamp. In France, these envelopes are sought after for the quality of their illustration and the precision of their cancellation, often carried out in the city to which the stamp's subject is linked, as here in Caen for the eponymous castle.
